Connecting Social and Emotional Learning to Professional Development for Educators and Effective Teaching

As a network of career development researchers from 20 countries, we aim to help educators become more aware of the nature and relevance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), thus supporting development of SEL skills as the means to improve youth’s academic outcomes, educational experiences, employment opportunities, and lives. Our project plans involve establishing a new, cross-cultural SEL measure and helping educators access to research-based PD resources. We examine whether educators who report higher SEL self-efficacy more likely to perceive the value and relevance of incorporating SEL skill development activities into their teaching and career development activities as relevant to their teaching role.

The network currently has 34 participants from 20 countries, representing a variety of cultures and education practices. The network strongly supports capacity building and is composed with people with different levels of experience, from experienced researchers to emerging scholars to masters and Ph.D. students. 



Dr. V. Scott Solberg

Dr. V. Scott Solberg will be the convener of the IRN and responsible for the successful execution of the project.  Since 2009, Dr. Solberg has studied the nature and promise of personalized career and academic planning which is referred to nationally as individualized learning plans or ILPs. Dr. Solberg will work closely with the Researcher and Project Coordinator, Dr. Chong Park, who holds a certification in project management.  Dr. Park and Dr. Solberg will be using Zoom to record conference calls and Qualtrics to facilitate survey implementation.  Kate Newman is a doctoral student with a journalism background who will be helping to write up synthesis reports in collaboration with Dr. Park and Dr. Solberg.
