We recently concluded our first webinar series which was hosted by the Coordination Office for Research on Multilingualism and Language Education (KoMBi) at the University of Hamburg and Dr. Gregory Poarch at the University of Münster.

The webinar was a first, with the goal to create a model on which future attempts could be based.

We had an international representation with applications being from 11 different countries, and the final nine participants being from 7 countries irrespectively. In their feedback multiple participants mentioned that they found the networking very helpful and they hope to keep in contact with their new colleagues. The feedback which we have received has been very positive. We feel like this initial attempt has been a great accomplishment.

The aims for the webinar was to:

  • Reach, support and include emergent researchers from a range of countries who have different approaches to the research topic and different experiences of research support and academic networking;
  • facilitate international networking between young researchers using new media;
  • create a wider basis for research in language and education by incorporating more diverse (cultural, linguistic etc.) backgrounds;
  • offer mentoring and feedback to the participants in the acquisition and development of research and presentation skills;
  • develop a set of best-practice criteria for supporting emergent researchers in an international context in the future.
  • Provide substantive exposure to education research on societal multilingualism and explore research directions in a worldwide context.

The presenters, participants and the WERA Executive Committee felt that these aims were met. We hope to utilise this model more in the near future.
