WERA Sponsored Symposium

WERA sponsored a symposium on January 13th at the Education Association of South Africa (EASA) 2011 Conference featuring Fernand Gervais (Canada), Carol Lee (United States) and Liesel Ebersöhn (South Africa). Carol Lee, representing WERA, also gave the third key-note presentation, “Addressing Diversity and Equity in Education in an Interdependent World: The South African and U.S. Challenges, Lessons and Opportunities” on January 13th “Hosted by the University of South Africa (Unisa) and held from January 10 to 13th in Sun City, South Africa, the 2011 EASA Conference theme was “Beauty and the Beast: Turning the Tide in Education.”

Carol D. Lee Presents Key Note Address at EASA 2011 Conference

Carol D Lee, the Edwina S. Tarry Professor of Education and Social Policy in the Learning Sciences Program at Northwestern University, presented the third keynote address at the EASA Conference. Lee is the immediate past President of the American Educational Research Association, and an elected fellow of both the National Academy of Education and the National Conference of Research on Language and Literacy. In 2004-2005, she was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford, California. Her research interests focus on urban education, cultural supports for literacy, classroom discourse, and instructional design. Lee is the author of three books, along with numerous other scholarly publications on literacy, urban education and other subjects. She also served as Literacy Consultant to the Education Transition Team of the Administration of President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2009. [Click here for presentation]
