Who We Are
The World Education Research Association (WERA) is an association of national, regional, and international specialty research associations aimed at advancing education research as a scientific and scholarly field. Established on April 18, 2009 in San Diego, California, WERA aims to undertake initiatives that are global in nature and thus transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization. Member associations are resolved to work together to address such issues as building capacity and interest in education research, advancing education research policies and practices, and promoting the use and application of education research around the world.
Annual Focal Meetings
Each year, WERA holds a Focal Meeting in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of a WERA member association. Focal Meetings consist of a strand of paper and symposia sessions, lectures, and other substantive activities focusing on issues of significance to education research through a world-wide perspective.
International Research Networks (IRN)
IRNs are temporary collaborative groups of scholars working on a specific research topic primarily through virtual communications. IRNs synthesize knowledge, examine the state of research, and stimulate collaborations or otherwise identify promising directions in research areas of worldwide significance.
WERA Task Forces
Task Forces are established by the WERA Council to address education research or research policy issues where WERA may wish to disseminate information or present a view about sound research policy. Task forces undertake work under their charge under the direction of co-chairs who report to the WERA Council.
Keynote and Symposia
WERA accepts invitations for keynote and symposia sessions at WERA Association Members’ conferences to expand its footprint and presence beyond the annual Focal Meetings.
Outreach
WERA aims to expand its geographical scope and member representation – especially towards developing nations – in order to share the benefits derived from WERA’s functions, initiatives, and resources.
Publications
WERA publishes the Global perspectives on Education Research (GPER) and the WERA Springer Book Series as part of its mandate is to advance education research as a scientific and scholarly field.
Opportunities for Early Career Researchers
Doctoral & Early Career Network
WERA aims to provide doctoral and early career scholars the opportunity to network with and meet each other, as well as to build relationships with expert researchers in the field of education.
Mentoring Programme
WERA strives to increase its support to early career researchers by strengthening their research capacity as scientists through its online-based Mentoring Programme linking senior scholars and postdoctoral educational researchers who share a common research interest.
Visiting Researcher Award
These awards form part of WERA’s capacity building initiatives in collaboration with our Association and Institutional Members.
Online Seminars
WERA is dedicated to capacity development and recognises the importance of equal access. Our online seminars allow researchers from all over to access these opportunities and are organised in collaboration with our Member and Institutional Associations.
WERA Memberships
For Associations
WERA welcomes membership from education research associations from countries around the world. We currently have more than 20 Association Members in Asia, Africa, North America, South America, and Europe.
For Institutions
WERA encourages non-profit research institutions to join our roster of Institutional Members, including the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and the Universidad Nacional de Educación (UNAE) in Ecuador.
For Individuals
Individual scientists, scholars, students, and other professionals engaged in or committed to education research with a world-wide perspective are eligible for individual membership status in WERA.
